Theory teaching Books

This page contains a selection of the books that I use in music theory tuition. It is only a selection as I use so many. Most of them are available on amazon and musicroom.com.

Music Theory in Practice
Eric Taylor (ABRSM)

This series of workbooks, in eight books, covers all the requirements of the 8 theory grades of the Associated Board. Most of the pupils I work with will cover at least up to grade 3. If a pupil needs to pass grade 6 practical they need to pass grade 5 theory. Eric Taylor also wrote an accompanying text book.

Theory Time!
by David Turnbull

David Turnbull's series "Theory TIme!" is excellent and I use it with many pupils. One advantage over "Music Theory in Practice" is that there is more explanation in the text itself; this means that you do not have to consult a separate text book nearly as much as with "Music Theory in Practice".

Music Theory for
Young Children

This excellent series has just undergone a revision - so be careful. The revisions look good though. All of the pupils I've given these books to love them. Having said that I'm a bit careful about using the fourth book too soon. It will work well with keener young pupils who are well on the way to being ready for ABRSM theory grade 1.

Bastien Books

There are many Bastien theory books which I use. They work well with primary school age children and provide much useful supplementary material in the early stages. The two in the pic above are especially useful in the first 6 months.

Rock School Music Theory

Rock School is an increasingly recognised resource for music theory tuition outside

the classical realm. Blackburn College, to

name just one institution, is working with

their books and exams.
